Updated:
Balchik is about 45 km north of Varna, around 50 minutes by car, and Cape Kaliakra is about 30 km further along the coast, roughly 35 minutes. In one day you can walk through the Balchik Palace and its botanical garden, have lunch by the sea and spend the afternoon on the Kaliakra headland, back in Varna by early evening.
The route
The road runs north from Varna past Golden Sands and Albena, then down into Balchik, which sits on terraces above the sea. From there it continues through Kavarna to the cape. Buses reach Balchik and Kavarna, but there is little public transport to Kaliakra itself, so a car makes the whole loop simple.
| Leg | Distance, about | Time, about |
|---|---|---|
| Varna to Balchik | 45 km | 50 min |
| Balchik to Cape Kaliakra | 30 km | 35 min |
| Kaliakra to Varna | 65 km | 1 h 10 min |
Use the booking form above to send your route and date. Balchik is pre-filled; mention that you want to continue to Kaliakra.
Balchik Palace and botanical garden
The palace was built in the 1920s and 1930s as a summer residence for Queen Marie of Romania, when this coast was part of Romania. It is a mix of styles, with a minaret-like tower, white walls and terraces stepping down to the water. Around it lies a botanical garden managed by Sofia University, with thousands of plant species and a large outdoor collection of cacti.
- Allow about two hours for the palace and gardens.
- Paths are steep in places; comfortable shoes help.
- The complex has its own opening hours and tickets; check them on the official site before your visit, as they change by season.
Cape Kaliakra
Kaliakra is a narrow headland that runs about 2 km into the Black Sea, with red cliffs up to around 70 m high. Along it are the remains of a fortress, a small chapel, a museum in a cave and viewpoints where you may see cormorants and, on calm days, dolphins. The cape is a nature reserve, and a small entry fee is usually charged.
Kaliakra is exposed and windy, even in summer. Take a jacket and hold on to hats and phones near the edges, where there are few railings.

Other trips north of Varna
Closer to the city, Aladzha Monastery is a rock monastery in the forest above Golden Sands, suitable for a half-day. Inland, the Madara Rider is a medieval relief carved high on a cliff. For a full list, read day trips from Varna.
Along the way
If you have time on the drive north, the village of Topola and the stretch around Albena have viewpoints over the coast, and Kavarna, between Balchik and the cape, has a small seafront and a harbour. Further north of Kaliakra lie Tyulenovo, with low cliffs and rock arches, and Shabla, with its tall lighthouse. Adding them makes a longer day but shows how varied this northern coast is compared with the beach resorts.
Best time
Late spring to early autumn is best for the gardens and the cape. In May and June the garden is in full flower; in September the sea is still warm and the roads are quieter. In winter the gardens are bare and Kaliakra can be bitterly windy.
