The Ropotamo River boat trips leave from a landing by the road bridge on the coast road between Sozopol and Primorsko. From Burgas that is about 45 km, around 45 minutes by car; from Sozopol about 15 minutes and from Primorsko about 10. Boats run in the warm season, and the whole visit takes 2 to 3 hours.
The Ropotamo is a slow, green river that winds through a nature reserve before it reaches the sea. Small boats take visitors downstream past overhanging trees and water lilies to the river mouth, with a rock known as the Lion’s Head on the bank. It is one of the most popular short outings on the southern coast.
The landing has a car park and a few stalls, but no regular public transport that stops right there at convenient times. Taking a bus means walking along a busy road; with a driver you are dropped at the landing and collected when you are ready.
Distances to the boat landing
| Starting point | Distance | Drive time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burgas centre | about 45 km | about 45 min | Via the coast road through Sozopol turn-off |
| Sozopol | about 15 km | about 15 min | Easy to combine |
| Primorsko | about 10 km | about 10 min | Closest resort |
| Sunny Beach | about 80 km | about 1 h 15 min | Through Burgas; heavy in July and August |
| Nessebar | about 75 km | about 1 h 10 min | Through Burgas |
When the boats run
The boats are run by private operators, mainly from late spring to early autumn. Departures are frequent in July and August, and in quieter months some boats wait until enough passengers arrive. Times and prices are set by the operators and are not published in one official timetable, so ask your hotel or check on the day.
Go in the morning. The light on the river is softer, the landing is quieter and you avoid the afternoon traffic back into Burgas.

What to bring
- Insect repellent: the river banks are wooded and damp.
- Cash for the boat and the car park stalls.
- A hat; the boats have little shade.
- Binoculars if you like birds; the reserve has herons and other waterbirds.
Rules in the reserve
The Ropotamo reserve is protected. Visitors stay on the boats and marked paths, and fishing, fires and picking plants are not allowed. Boats keep to a set route through the reserve.
To request the trip, enter Burgas and Primorsko in the form above, or your own hotel, and write in the notes that you want to stop at the Ropotamo landing. Our page on day trips from Burgas has other ideas on the same coast.
