Updated:
Going from Sofia to Plovdiv via Rila Monastery turns a 1 h 45 min transfer into a full sightseeing day. The detour adds about 135 km: Sofia to the monastery is about 120 km (around 2 hours), and the monastery to Plovdiv about 160 km (around 2 h 45 min) over the Rila foothills. Plan 9 to 10 hours door to door.
Most visitors travel from Sofia to Plovdiv at some point, and most also want to see Rila Monastery. Doing both in one day saves a separate return trip to the monastery and gives you a day in the mountains with your luggage safely in the car. It is a one-way day: it starts at your Sofia hotel and ends at your Plovdiv hotel.
The route
| Leg | Distance | Drive time | Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sofia to Rila Monastery | about 120 km | about 2 h | Struma motorway to Dupnitsa, then the Rila valley road |
| Rila Monastery to Samokov | about 70 km | about 1 h 15 min | Back to Dupnitsa area, then over the hills via Sapareva Banya |
| Samokov to Plovdiv | about 95 km | about 1 h 30 min | Past Borovets and Kostenets to the Trakia motorway |
| Total | about 280 km | about 4 h 45 min | Without stops |
The alternative is to return from the monastery towards Sofia and take the Trakia motorway to Plovdiv. It is longer in kilometres but mostly on motorway, and in snow it can be the safer choice. Your driver will choose according to the conditions on the day.

Optional stops
- Boyana Church, on the edge of Sofia, at the very start of the day. Its 13th-century frescoes are on the UNESCO list. Adds about 1 hour. Visitor numbers inside are limited, so expect a short wait.
- Stob Pyramids, earth pillars near the village of Stob, about 15 minutes off the monastery road. Adds 1 h 30 min including a short uphill walk.
- Sapareva Banya, a small spa town with a hot-water geyser in the centre. Adds 20 to 30 minutes.
- Borovets, the mountain resort, for a coffee with views in any season.
Choose one or two. Adding all of them makes the day too long.

Do you need a guide?
The monastery has information in several languages, but the frescoes and history are richer with an explanation. Our page do you need a guide as well as a driver explains how to add a guide for an hour at the monastery.
