Etar open-air museum and Tryavna: a day with a driver

Updated:

The Etar Architectural-Ethnographic Complex lies about 8 km south of Gabrovo, around 1 hour from Veliko Tarnovo by car. Tryavna is about 30 minutes from Etar, and from Tryavna back to Veliko Tarnovo is about 50 minutes. With 2 hours at Etar and 2 hours in Tryavna, the loop makes a relaxed 7 to 8 hour day.

Etar is an open-air museum of the crafts and daily life of the Gabrovo region in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was founded in 1964 and has about 50 buildings, including houses with craft workshops and the only collection in Bulgaria of water-powered machines such as mills and fulling mills, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Craftspeople work in the shops along the main street, and you can buy what they make.

Tryavna, in the hills nearby, is a small town known for woodcarving and icon painting, with a well-kept old centre of 19th-century houses.

Etar: what to see

  • The craft street: bell-making, pottery, copperware, furriery and traditional sweets, with craftspeople at work.
  • The water-powered machines along the stream: mills, a fulling mill and a sawmill.
  • House interiors showing how families lived in the 19th century.
  • Guided tours: the Ministry of Tourism lists guides speaking Bulgarian, English, German and Russian.

Etar is open all year and visits are paid. Gabrovo Municipality lists contact numbers for the complex; check opening hours before your visit, especially in winter.

Parts of Etar are on gravel paths and slopes beside the stream. Comfortable shoes help, and a pushchair can manage most of the main street.

Tryavna: what to see

Tryavna’s old centre is small enough to walk in an hour, but it rewards a slower pace. The clock tower on Slaveykov Square, the Old School building, and the houses with carved wooden ceilings are the highlights. The Tryavna school of woodcarving produced iconostases for churches across Bulgaria, and the museum explains its history.

Children usually prefer Etar, where something is always moving: a water wheel, a potter’s wheel, a blacksmith’s hammer. Adults who enjoy old houses often find Tryavna the more atmospheric of the two, especially late in the afternoon when the day visitors have left.

Ways to vary the day

  • Add Bozhentsi, a tiny architectural reserve village near Gabrovo, with stone-roofed houses.
  • Stop at the Dryanovo Monastery and the nearby Bacho Kiro cave on the way back.
  • Visit the House of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo, a museum that plays on the town’s reputation for jokes.
  • Prefer nature? Swap the day for Krushuna Waterfalls and Devetashka Cave.
