Updated:
The Sound and Light show over Tsarevets Fortress is watched from Tsar Asen I Square, at the entrance to the fortress in Veliko Tarnovo. It does not run every night, so check the dates first. From Arbanasi the square is about 5 km away, around 10 to 15 minutes by car, which makes a booked return trip the simplest way to get back after dark.
The show, called Tsarevgrad Tarnov, lights up the walls and towers of the medieval fortress with coloured lights, lasers and music, telling the story of the rise and fall of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The modern version lasts about 16 minutes, according to Bulgarian National Radio. In 2025 the show marked 40 years since the fortress was first lit.

How to find out if the show is on
Shows are announced for national holidays, festivals and special occasions, and can also be ordered for groups. Dates are announced by Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and local tourist information. Check close to your travel dates, ask at your hotel on the day, and be ready for cancellations in bad weather.
Arrive at the square 20 to 30 minutes early on holidays. The best spots, with the whole hill in view, fill up, and the show starts on time.
Getting there and back from Arbanasi
Arbanasi is a village on the plateau above Veliko Tarnovo, with old merchant houses, quiet hotels and wide views. It is a lovely base, but at night it is a different matter: the road down to the town is steep and winding, there are no pavements, and taxis are in high demand when the show ends because everyone leaves at once.
A booked car takes care of both directions. A typical evening looks like this.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 19:30 | Pick-up at your hotel in Arbanasi |
| 19:45 | Drop-off near Tsar Asen I Square |
| 20:00 | Dinner in the old town, or a walk on Gurko Street |
| Show time | Watch from the square |
| After the show | Pick-up at a set point away from the busiest street |
| About 15 min later | Back in Arbanasi |
Show times vary with the season because it starts after dark. Set the pick-up after you know the start time.
Other hotels outside the centre
- Hotels on the edge of town or in nearby villages face the same issue: a late return when demand is highest.
- If you are staying in central Veliko Tarnovo, you can walk; the old town streets are steep and cobbled, so take a torch or use your phone light.
- Travelling from further away, for example from Gabrovo or Tryavna after a day at Etar and Tryavna, a driver can bring you to the show and back in one booking.
Combining with a day trip
If you are coming for the day from Sofia or Varna, staying for the show means a very late return; it usually makes more sense to stay the night. See Veliko Tarnovo from Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo from Varna for the day-trip options.
To book, enter Arbanasi and Veliko Tarnovo in the form above, choose the return option, and write the times you want in the notes.
