A day trip to Veliko Tarnovo from Varna is possible but long. The town is about 225 km away, around 3 hours each way by car, so a 12-hour day leaves 5 to 6 hours on the ground. That is enough for Tsarevets Fortress, the old streets and Arbanasi, but not for much more.
Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and its fortress hill, Tsarevets, is one of the most photographed places in the country. Many visitors on the coast want to see it, and the question is whether the drive is worth it. This page gives you the numbers and a plan, so you can decide.
How long is the drive?
| Leg | Distance | Typical drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna to Shumen | about 90 km | about 1 h 10 min | A2 Hemus motorway |
| Shumen to Veliko Tarnovo | about 135 km | about 1 h 50 min | Single-carriageway roads through Targovishte or Omurtag |
| Total one way | about 225 km | about 3 h | Add 20 to 30 min on summer weekends |
| Return | about 225 km | about 3 h | Evening traffic is usually light |
The second half of the route is on ordinary two-lane roads through small towns and some hills, so the average speed drops. Three hours is a fair planning figure; it can be 2 h 45 min with an early start and clear roads.
What fits into the day
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 07:30 | Pick-up in Varna |
| 10:30 | Arrive Veliko Tarnovo, Tsarevets Fortress (1 h 30 min) |
| 12:15 | Lunch in the old town |
| 13:30 | Samovodska charshia, the craft street, and views of the Asenevtsi monument |
| 15:00 | Arbanasi: Nativity Church and the merchant houses (1 h 15 min) |
| 16:30 | Leave for Varna |
| 19:30 | Back in Varna |
This is a full but reasonable day. It leaves out museums in the town and the Etar open-air museum near Gabrovo, which would need another 1 h 30 min of driving. If you want those, a night in Veliko Tarnovo makes more sense: see Etar and Tryavna for a day based in the town.
When the day trip makes sense, and when it does not
- It works if you have one free day, are happy in a car for six hours and want to see the old capital above all else.
- It works less well with small children or anyone who gets car-sick on winding roads.
- Consider staying a night if you want to watch the evening Sound and Light show over Tsarevets; it starts after dark, which makes the return to Varna very late.
- Consider a shorter trip if the drive puts you off: Madara, Shumen and the Stone Forest offers medieval history with half the driving.
A one-way option
If you are leaving the coast anyway, the drive can be one way: Varna in the morning, sightseeing in Veliko Tarnovo and drop-off at your hotel there, or a stop in Veliko Tarnovo on the way to Sofia. This turns a tiring return day into a travel day with a long stop in the middle.
Tsarevets Fortress is on a steep hill with uneven stone paths. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you pack for this day.
