Updated:
Veliko Tarnovo is about 220 km north-east of Sofia, around 3 hours each way by car. You can do it in a day: leave at 07:30, spend five to six hours on Tsarevets Hill, the old streets and Arbanasi, and be back in Sofia by about 20:30. If you want the evening sound and light show, stay overnight.
The honest answer
Yes, but it is a full day. Six hours of driving leaves time for the essentials: the fortress, a walk through the old town and lunch with a view of the river bends. It does not leave time for everything nearby, and it rules out the evening light show unless you are happy to arrive back after midnight.

What to see
Tsarevets
The hill was the citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. The walls have been rebuilt along their old line, and the Patriarchal Church at the summit has modern murals that divide opinion. The site has its own opening hours and ticket; check them with the Veliko Tarnovo museum before you travel, especially in winter.
The old town
The houses cling to the slopes above the Yantra river. Gurko Street, below the main road, is the most photographed, and the Samovodska Charshiya is a short lane of workshops: copper, pottery, sweets.
Arbanasi
A village of stone merchant houses on the plateau above the town. The Nativity Church looks plain from outside but is covered in frescoes inside.
If your heart is set on the sound and light show, read our guide to the Tsarevets sound and light show first. It only runs on certain evenings, which is a strong argument for staying the night.
On the way
The route east from Sofia passes through the Balkan foothills. A coffee stop around the halfway point is usual. On the way back, if you are not tired, you can break the journey near Lovech or Pleven, but this lengthens a day that is already long.
Shorter alternatives
If three hours each way is more than you want, the Koprivshtitsa trip gives you historic houses in under two hours, and the Belogradchik Rocks offer a fortress in a similar drive. For a few hours only, see the Boyana Church and Vitosha half-day.
Who should stay overnight
- Families with young children, who will find six hours in the car tiring.
- Anyone who wants Etar, Tryavna or Dryanovo Monastery as well.
- Visitors in winter, when daylight ends early and roads can be slower.
- Anyone who wants to see the town lit up in the evening.
