Half-day in Sofia with a driver: Boyana Church and Vitosha

Updated:

Boyana Church is about 8 km from central Sofia, around 20 to 30 minutes by car. In a four-hour half-day you can see the church (visits inside are limited to 10 minutes), drive up to a viewpoint on Vitosha such as Zlatni Mostove, and be back in the centre for lunch or dinner.

Why do this with a driver

The three places on this route are close on a map but awkward to link by public transport. Boyana sits at the foot of the mountain, the viewpoints are up winding roads, and buses to them are infrequent. With a driver for a few hours you move straight from one to the next.

Use the booking form above to send your route and date, and describe the half-day plan. The form is pre-filled for a Rila Monastery trip, so change the destination if you only want the Sofia half-day, or keep it if you want Boyana as the first stop of a full day.

Boyana Church: what to know before you go

The small church holds frescoes from 1259 that are among the most important medieval paintings in Europe, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To protect them, the rules are strict.

  • No more than 9 visitors inside at once, and visits to the medieval part last 10 minutes.
  • No photography or filming inside, by camera or phone.
  • Open daily, but closed on 1 January, Orthodox Easter Sunday, and 24 and 25 December.
  • From 1 April to 31 October it opens 09:30 to 18:00; from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00 to 17:30. Last entry is 10 minutes before closing.

These details come from the church’s official visitor information, which also lists ticket prices and free-entry days. Check it before your visit.

Vitosha can be 8 to 10 degrees colder than the city and the weather changes quickly. Bring a jacket even on a warm day, and good shoes for the boulder field.

Make it a full day

Boyana is on the southern side of Sofia, on the way to the Struma motorway, so it fits at the start or end of a Rila Monastery day trip. If you prefer an outdoor detour, the Stob Pyramids are on the same route. Before a Rila trip, read Rila Monastery opening hours and dress code.

Seasonal notes

In winter the upper Vitosha roads can be snowy and busy with skiers on weekends. Zlatni Mostove is usually reachable, but the higher Aleko area depends on conditions. In summer, late afternoon is pleasant on the mountain, while the church is quieter early in the morning.
