Use the booking form above to send your route and date. If you want to be at the gates soon after opening, choose an early pick-up time in Sofia.

Tickets

Entry to the courtyard and the church has traditionally been free. The museum charges a fee, and a combined ticket covers all the exhibitions. At the time of writing the BTA listing gave around €4 for the main museum and around €10 for the combined ticket, with guided tours of about 50 minutes available in English or French for a separate fee. Treat these as a guide and check on arrival.

Dress code

Rila is a working Orthodox monastery, and the monks expect visitors to dress modestly.

  • Shoulders covered: no sleeveless tops.
  • Knees covered: long trousers for men; skirts below the knee or trousers for women.
  • Hats off inside the church.
  • A scarf for women is welcome, though not always required.
  • Wraps are sometimes available to borrow at the entrance, but do not rely on it.

The monastery is at about 1,150 m and noticeably cooler than Sofia. A long-sleeved layer solves both the dress code and the temperature.

Photography

You can take pictures in the courtyard and of the outside of the buildings, including the painted arcades of the main church. Photography is not allowed inside the church or the museum. Drones need permission and are best left in the bag.

Best time to arrive

ArrivalWhat to expect
Before 10:00Quiet courtyard, soft light, few groups
10:30 to 14:00Busiest period, when coach tours from Sofia arrive
After 15:00Calmer again, but the museum closes at 16:30 outside summer

For most visitors, leaving Sofia at 08:00 and arriving around 10:00 works well. If the museum matters to you, do not leave it until the afternoon in the cooler months.

Behaviour inside

Speak quietly in the church, do not touch the icons unless you are there to venerate them, and stand aside if a service is under way. Smoking is not allowed in the courtyard. If you want to light a candle, they are sold at a stand near the church entrance; the small donation helps maintain the monastery.

The monks also run accommodation in the monastery, and there are guest houses and hotels in the valley, so an overnight stay is possible if you would like to see the courtyard in the quiet of early morning.

Plan the rest of the day

Our full Rila Monastery day trip plan covers timings and lunch. On the way back you can add the Stob Pyramids or, closer to Sofia, Boyana Church, which has its own strict visiting rules.
