Rila Monastery day trip from Sofia with a private driver

Updated:

Rila Monastery is about 120 km south of Sofia, a drive of around 2 hours each way via the Struma motorway and the Rila valley road. With a private driver you can leave at 08:00, have three hours at the monastery, add a stop such as the Stob Pyramids or Boyana Church on the way back, and be in Sofia by early evening.

Why most people go by car

There is a public bus from Sofia, but departures are few, so the day is fixed around someone else’s timetable and the return time. Organised group tours solve that but follow a set script and often pair the monastery with Boyana Church whether you want it or not.

With a driver the timing is yours. You can arrive before the coaches, which usually reach the monastery from late morning, stay as long as you like in the courtyard and museum, and choose what to see on the way back.

What to see at the monastery

The monastery was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan of Rila and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of what you see today was rebuilt in the 19th century after a fire, apart from Hrelyo’s Tower, a 14th-century stone keep that survived. The main church, with its striped arcades and painted porch, is the centre of the courtyard.

  • The main church: frescoes inside and on the outer gallery. No photography inside.
  • The museum: home of Rafail’s Cross, a wooden cross carved with hundreds of tiny figures. The museum has its own opening hours and ticket.
  • The kitchen and residential wings: the old kitchen with its huge chimney is worth a look.
  • St Ivan’s cave: a few kilometres up the valley road, a short forest walk to the cave where the saint lived. Add it if you have spare time.

For the practical details, including dress rules and museum hours, see our page on Rila Monastery opening hours and dress code.

Stops on the way back

Stob Pyramids

Tall earth pillars above the village of Stob, a short detour from the valley road. The walk up takes about an hour there and back. Details in our guide to visiting the Stob Pyramids.

Boyana Church

If you have energy left, Boyana Church sits on the southern edge of Sofia, close to the route home. Visits inside are limited to 10 minutes and the church has fixed closing times, so it only works if you are back in Sofia by late afternoon. See Boyana Church and Vitosha.

The last few kilometres follow a narrow valley road. In winter it is usually cleared, but allow extra time after snowfall and set off a little earlier.

Practical notes

  • Bring cash for parking, the museum ticket and small purchases; card payment is not accepted everywhere.
  • The monastery is at about 1,150 m, so it is cooler than Sofia. Take a layer even in summer.
  • Weekends and church holidays are busier. A weekday visit is calmer.

Frequently asked questions
