Stob Pyramids: how to visit with a driver

Updated:

The Stob Pyramids stand above the village of Stob, about 95 km south of Sofia and roughly 25 km, or 35 minutes, from Rila Monastery. The marked trail to the main pillars takes about an hour there and back. They fit neatly into a Rila Monastery day trip, adding around 1.5 to 2 hours in total.

What the pyramids are

The pyramids are pillars of soft earth and sandstone, some more than 10 metres tall, many of them topped by a balanced stone cap. Rain wears away the softer ground around them while the caps protect what lies beneath. They look different from different angles, and local legends tell of a wedding party turned to stone.

Where they fit in your day

Stob is a short turn off the road from the Struma motorway towards Rila town and the monastery. Visiting on the way back is usually best: the monastery is quieter in the morning, and the pyramids catch warm light in the afternoon.

Use the booking form above to send your route and date. Rila Monastery is pre-filled as the destination; mention that you would like to stop at Stob on the way.

The trail

  1. Start in the upper part of Stob village, where signs point to the eco trail.
  2. Follow the path uphill. It is steady rather than steep, on dirt and gravel with some steps.
  3. After about 25 to 30 minutes you reach the main viewing platforms among the tallest pillars.
  4. Return the same way, about 20 to 25 minutes downhill.

There may be a small entrance fee at the start of the trail; bring a little cash. The path has very little shade, which matters in July and August.

Day plan with Rila Monastery

After rain the path turns slippery clay. Trainers with a good tread are fine in dry weather; in wet weather walking shoes are better.

Before you go

Read our page on Rila Monastery opening hours and dress code so the morning goes smoothly, and the full Rila Monastery day trip plan for timings. If you prefer to start the day in the city, the Boyana Church and Vitosha half-day can be combined with Stob instead of Rila.

Who it suits

  • Families with children who can walk an hour; the shapes keep children interested.
  • Photographers, who will want the late afternoon light.
  • Anyone who has seen Rila before and wants something different on the same road.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures and clear views of the Rila mountains behind the pillars. Summer afternoons can be very hot on the open slope, so go earlier or later in the day. In winter the trail can be muddy or icy, and the short daylight makes it harder to combine with the monastery.

If you have trouble with uphill walking, the view from the lower part of the trail still gives a good idea of the formations.
