Updated:
The cost of a private driver in Bulgaria depends on five things: how many hours the day lasts, how many kilometres you drive, the size of the vehicle, how long the car waits while you sightsee, and the season. Because every route is different, the fair way to compare is to send the same itinerary to each provider and check what each price includes.
Searching for a single figure is frustrating, because a three-hour city tour and a twelve-hour trip to Veliko Tarnovo are very different jobs. This page explains what goes into the price, so you can judge offers and plan a day that fits your budget. For our own price for your route, use the booking form.
What drives the price
| Factor | Why it matters | How to keep it down |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | The driver’s time is booked for the whole day, including the time you spend at sights | Group sights that are close together; avoid long gaps |
| Distance | Fuel, tolls and wear grow with kilometres | Choose closer destinations or a one-way day that ends where you are going next |
| Vehicle size | A van costs more to run than a sedan | Book the smallest car that fits people and luggage comfortably |
| Waiting | Long stops still occupy the car and driver | Plan realistic times at each stop |
| Season and day | Summer weekends and holidays are in high demand | Travel midweek or outside July and August if you can |
| Start and end time | Very early or late finishes stretch the working day | Keep the day within normal hours where possible |
How to compare offers fairly
Two prices only compare well if they describe the same day. Before you choose, check each offer against this list.
- Is the price for the vehicle or per person? Per-vehicle pricing favours groups of three or more.
- How many hours are included, and what happens if the day runs longer?
- Are fuel, tolls and parking included?
- Is the start and end point your hotel, or a central meeting point?
- What size of car is quoted, and does it fit your luggage if the day ends at a new hotel?
- Are child seats available, and is there a charge?
- Are entrance tickets, a guide or meals included? Usually they are not, and they should not be assumed.
When asking several companies, copy the same text into each request: pick-up address, date, start time, stops in order, end point, number of passengers and children’s ages. You will get answers you can compare line by line.
Private driver, group tour or rental car
| Option | Cost pattern | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Group coach tour | Price per person; fixed route and times | You are one or two people and the tour goes exactly where you want |
| Private driver | Price per vehicle; your route and pace | You are three or more, have children, or want several stops in one day |
| Rental car | Daily rate plus fuel, vignette check, parking and insurance excess | You are confident on mountain roads and do not plan to drink wine at lunch |

Example: how two days differ
A half day from Sofia to Boyana Church and the slopes of Vitosha involves under 40 km of driving and three or four hours. A day to Rila Monastery means about 240 km there and back and seven or eight hours. The second day costs more because both distance and hours are greater, not because of the destination itself.
Adding a second sight on the same road usually adds little distance. Adding one in another direction adds both hours and kilometres. Our list of the best day trips from Sofia shows which places combine naturally.

Frequently asked questions
Is a private driver priced per person or per car?
Most private drivers in Bulgaria price per vehicle, so the cost per person falls as the group grows. Always check this when comparing offers.
What makes a day with a driver more expensive?
Longer hours, more kilometres, a larger vehicle, long waits and busy dates such as summer weekends.
Are entrance fees included in the price?
Usually not. Entrance fees, guided tours and meals are normally paid separately at each site.
How can I compare offers from different drivers?
Send exactly the same itinerary to each one and check what each price includes: hours, fuel, tolls, parking, vehicle size and child seats.
