The best day trips from Sofia fall into three bands. Under an hour: Boyana Church and Vitosha. One to two hours: Rila Monastery (about 2 h), Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa (about 1 h 45 min each), the Seven Rila Lakes and the Stob Pyramids. Around three hours: Veliko Tarnovo, Melnik and Belogradchik, which make long days.
