Winter day trips from Sofia

Updated:

The best winter day trips from Sofia are Vitosha (about 40 minutes), Samokov and Borovets (about 1 h 15 min), Rila Monastery (about 2 hours) and Plovdiv (about 1 h 45 min on the motorway). In December and January the sun sets before 17:00, so start by 9:00 and allow extra time on mountain roads.

Winter changes the choice of day trips. High mountain sights such as the Seven Rila Lakes are out of reach for most visitors, and some small museums keep shorter hours. On the other hand, monasteries in snow, a day in a ski resort without skiing, and quiet old towns have their own appeal. This page picks the trips that still work.

Short days need early starts

In Sofia the sun sets around 17:00 in mid-December and only a little later in January and February. Mountain valleys lose the light earlier still. For a trip of two hours each way, a 9:00 start gives you around four hours on site in daylight. Many sights also close earlier in winter than in summer.

Plan mountain drives for daylight and the city part of the day for after dark. A late afternoon in Plovdiv’s old town or in Sofia’s centre is a good way to end.

The best winter trips in more detail

Vitosha

The mountain above Sofia often has snow from December to March. Aleko, at the top of the road, has ski runs, sledging and mountain huts serving hot food. It is a half-day trip and a good choice for families. Weekend traffic on the Vitosha road is heavy on sunny days, so a weekday is easier.

Samokov and Borovets

Samokov is an old market town with a history museum and a large mosque, and Borovets, 10 km above it, is one of Bulgaria’s main ski resorts. You do not need to ski: walk in the forest, take photos of the slopes, and have lunch in a mountain restaurant. Combine with a stop at Sapareva Banya’s hot geyser on the way back if the roads are good.

Rila Monastery

Snow on the mountains around the courtyard makes Rila Monastery even more striking, and there are far fewer visitors than in summer. The road up the valley is usually cleared, but it can be slow after heavy snowfall. Check the monastery’s winter visiting hours before you go.

Plovdiv

If the forecast for the mountains is bad, Plovdiv is the safe choice: the whole route is on the Trakia motorway, and the city’s Roman theatre, old town houses and museums make a full day.

Safety and comfort

  • Mountain roads can change quickly in snow. If conditions are poor, be ready to switch to a lower-altitude plan such as Plovdiv.
  • Wear boots with grip: monastery courtyards and old town streets get icy.
  • Take layers and gloves; Borovets and Aleko are much colder than Sofia.
  • If you are travelling with children, read day trips from Sofia with kids for shorter options.
