Prohodna Cave is near the village of Karlukovo in Lukovit municipality, about 115 km north-east of Sofia and around 2 hours by car. There is no practical public transport to the cave itself. With a driver you can see the two openings known as the Eyes of God, walk the Iskar valley nearby and stop at the Glava Panega spring, back in Sofia by late afternoon.
Why public transport does not work
Karlukovo has a railway station on the Sofia to Gorna Oryahovitsa line, but trains are infrequent and the cave is a walk of a couple of kilometres from the station along a country road. Buses to the village are rare. It is the kind of place that is very easy by car and very hard without one.
| By train | By car with a driver | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there | Infrequent trains to Karlukovo, then a walk | About 2 h door to door |
| Combining other sights | Not practical | Glava Panega, Iskar Gorge, Lukovit |
| Return | Depends on the timetable | When you are ready |
| Good for | Experienced walkers with time | Families and anyone short of time |
Use the booking form above to send your route and date. Lukovit is pre-filled as the destination; the cave is a short drive beyond it.
What the Eyes of God are
Prohodna is a through-cave: a huge natural tunnel open at both ends. In the roof of the main chamber are two holes shaped like eyes. When light falls through them, especially from late morning to midday, they look like a giant face looking down at you. The cave floor is open and walkable, and it is a popular spot for photographers and climbers.
- Access is open; there is normally no ticket or guided tour.
- The path from the parking area is short but uneven and can be muddy.
- Inside it is cool and shaded even in summer.
- There are no facilities at the cave itself, so bring water.
A sample day
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:30 | Pick-up in Sofia |
| 10:30 | Prohodna Cave |
| 10:30 to 12:00 | The Eyes of God, then the path along the river cliffs |
| 12:00 to 13:00 | Picnic, or lunch in Lukovit |
| 13:00 to 14:00 | Glava Panega, a karst spring with clear blue-green water |
| 14:00 to 16:15 | Return to Sofia, with an optional stop in the Iskar Gorge |
Light through the Eyes is strongest around midday on a sunny day. If photographs matter to you, time your arrival for late morning.
The landscape around Karlukovo
The area is part of a limestone landscape with dozens of caves, cliffs and gorges along the Iskar river. There are short marked trails from the cave along the cliffs. If you enjoy this kind of scenery, the drive back through the Iskar Gorge is worth taking slowly, with a stop at Cherepish Monastery.

Good to know before you go
The cave is an open natural site, not a managed show cave, so there are no staff, railings or opening hours in the usual sense. That is part of its appeal, but it also means you take care of yourself: stay away from cliff edges on the trails above, and do not climb the rock faces unless you are an equipped climber.
Weekends in spring and autumn bring local families and climbing groups. On a weekday you may have the main chamber almost to yourself.
What to wear
- Trainers or walking shoes with grip; the cave floor has loose stones.
- A light layer: the cave is noticeably cooler than outside.
- In wet weather, shoes you do not mind getting muddy.
