Seven Rila Lakes day trip from Sofia

Updated:

The Seven Rila Lakes are reached from Panichishte, above the town of Sapareva Banya, about 90 to 100 km from central Sofia and around 1 h 45 min to 2 h by car. A chairlift then takes you up to about 2,150 m, and the walk around the lakes takes 3 to 6 hours. Leave Sofia by 07:00 to have a relaxed day.

How the day fits together

This is three trips in one: the drive to the lower lift station at Pionerska hut, the chairlift up to Rila Lakes hut, and the hike itself. The weak link is the lift. It runs in the warm season, can stop in high wind or storms, and on Mondays it has been starting at midday because of maintenance checks.

If you miss the last lift down, the walk back to the car park is about two hours on a steep path. That is the main reason to start early and keep an eye on the clock.

The lakes, from bottom to top

The lakes sit in a chain between roughly 2,100 m and 2,535 m. From the lowest they are the Lower Lake, the Fish Lake, the Trefoil, the Twin, the Kidney, the Eye and the Tear. Most walkers aim for the ridge above the Kidney, from where you can see five or six of them at once.

  • Shorter option: the lower lakes only, about 2 to 3 hours from the upper lift.
  • Full loop: 10 to 12 km with around 300 m of climbing from the upper lift.
  • Without the lift: about 2 hours uphill from Pionerska and more than 1,000 m of ascent.

When to go

July to September is the season for most visitors. Snow can linger on the paths into June, and the lift often closes for maintenance in October. Weekends in July and August are crowded, so a weekday is better if you can choose.

Check the lift’s current hours on the operator’s site (rilskiezera.bg) the day before, and check the mountain forecast. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

What to bring

  • Walking boots or trail shoes with grip; the path is rocky.
  • A warm layer and a waterproof. It can be 10 degrees colder than in Sofia.
  • Water, snacks and sun protection. There is little shade above the hut.
  • Cash for the chairlift and parking.

Not a hiker? A gentler mountain day is Rila Monastery, or try a town day such as Plovdiv or Koprivshtitsa.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seven Rila Lakes chairlift open all year?

No. It runs mainly in summer and early autumn and closes for maintenance at times. Check the operator’s website before you travel.

Can I swim in the lakes?

No. Swimming and washing in the lakes are not allowed, as they lie in Rila National Park.

Is the hike suitable for children?

Fit children who walk regularly can manage the lower lakes. The full loop is long and exposed, so judge it on your family’s experience.

What happens if the lift stops because of wind?

You would need to walk down to Pionerska hut, which takes about two hours. Start early and turn back if the weather changes.
